General Education Section

Gener­al Ed­ucati­on Se­ction­

Statement of Purpose

The objective of the General Education Section is not only to impart students with basic academic skills, but to foster a broad and diversified perspective based on an understanding of a wide range of topics.

Educational Goals

1) The General Education Section, in addition to providing students with the basic literacy skills required in academic and professional settings, seeks to educate persons that are rich in humanity and that can both easily understand different cultures and communicate with others in a global, information-oriented society.
2) The General Education Section strives to educate persons who can think and understand from multiple viewpoints, by learning from a broad range of perspectives about our modern world and society and the contemporary issues that we face.
3) The General Education Section endeavours to deepen interest in and foster a multi-faceted understanding of local communities by making positive use of the local environment and populace as education resources, thus developing a readiness to learn from local realities.
4) The General Education Section aims to cultivate the habit of self-learning by fostering awareness of the importance and pleasure of broadening one’s intellectual interests.

Characteristics of General Education
Language, Technology, and Sports

Foundation courses that teach basic, academic literacy skills, foreign-language courses that stress communication skills and cross-cultural understanding, computer-based, information processing courses that prepare students for an information-oriented society, as well as sports-related courses are provided. Foundation courses, in particular, are held in small groups in which one teacher is in charge of a group of about ten students from all three departments.

Man, Society and Nature

Complementing those courses that are central to a university education and those that form the foundation of students’ selected professional training, courses that deal with a variety of contemporary issues are provided. By studying a diverse range of subjects, students develop a broad appreciation for and multi-faceted understanding of modern society.

Local understanding

Courses that examine Hokkaido from a variety of perspectives are provided with the goal of cultivating a desire to understand one’s local community, wherever that may be.
